How Twitter Wooed Me Back

01/16/2010

I was a fool to leave Twitter behind in a search for just one social media stud! Silly girl! Why couldn’t I see they’re all just alike!

Yes, dear readers, I have to admit it, but I’ve fallen back into Twitter’s “arms”! But now I’m older and wiser and can better manage the relationship!

(How about you? If you’ve “played the field” and will share your experiences publicly, please comment below)

So allow me to offer a few words of advice…

- If you hope to build name recognition, reserve your name on Twitter. I originally used “coloradocoach” but by the time I went in search of “Laura Benjamin” it was too late! Someone else had taken my name and I had to reclaim it with my middle initial.

- Integrate social media sites so when you post to one, it updates another. Now you can update your LinkedIn status via Twitter. While each audience may benefit from the tender loving care of a personalized post, you can leverage your content by taking advantage of cross-links too!

- Build social media goodwill by creating lists in Twitter. Feature your clients, colleagues, industry experts, peers, affiliates, PR and media sources. Why not make it easy for your followers to tap into the wisdom of subject matter experts and again, and avoid recreating the wheel?

- It offered me broader exposure. People have varying tastes and tolerance for web based tools. Some folks are intimidated by Twitter whereas others can’t live without it. If you’re going to get maximum marketing exposure or broaden your network of contacts, avoid relying on just one communication tool and leverage them all! (Well, maybe not ALL!)

- I watched what the experts were doing. I hated it when Mom said, “If Mary jumps off a bridge, are you going to jump off one too?” But I pay attention to trends that stick and it’s now become mainstream with experts fully onboard.

- I learned that size doesn’t matter – 140 characters is all a girl needs! We’re a culture of scanners with an 8-second attention span. We’ve gotten good at sifting and sorting in snippets and I want my snippets up there next to the best of ‘em!

Ultimately, you know best how to spend your precious time. I’ve decided to play the field…always did hate sitting at home on Saturday night waiting for the phone to ring!
